Cycle Sculpture
The Cycle Race Sculpture situated on the A4 on the Denbies/Friends Life roundabout was created to commemorate the London 2012 Olympic Cycling Road Races which sped past it in July 2012.
Cllr Caroline Salmon, Council Chairman in 2012, began leading a steering group to create a legacy statue when she was Vice-Chairman. It was then commissioned by Heather Burrell, following a competition judged by a committee of representatives from many local organisations including Mole Valley Youth Voice. It was funded by £10,000 of developer funds and 300 individuals who paid £40 each to purchase a personal mini sculpture of the oak leaf shape, found in the clothing of the racing cyclists on the sculpture. The whole process was done in less than 6 months.
It was carefully positioned on its elevated plinth to ensure it had optimum visual impact during the Olympic Road Race in 2012, and is still prominent today.
